Eight short lengths of 2x4 stack flat into a stepped tabletop tree, widest at the bottom. A small block underneath makes the trunk, and a jigsaw star from the leftover stands on a short dowel up top. Leave the wood raw. The grain does the decorating.

It's a good holiday morning in the shop: about 2–3 hours, no fancy joinery, and a mantel piece by lunch. If you can make a square cut and drive a screw, you've got this.
